The Judiciary of Uganda has announced plans to conduct the second National Court Case Census, scheduled to take place from January 13 to January 15, 2025.
The announcement was made by Deputy Chief Justice Richard Buteera during a press conference at the Judiciary Headquarters in Kampala.
This census is aimed at documenting and analyzing the pending cases across all Court levels, including the Supreme Court, Court of Appeal/Constitutional Court, High Court, Chief Magistrates’ Courts, and Magistrates Grade I and II Courts.
Justice Buteera said this Court census seeks to address long-standing challenges such as case backlog, inefficiencies in case management, and limited access to timely justice.
He added that it will help them to develop data-driven policy recommendations to streamline court processes and reduce case backlog.
Justice Buteera called on the public, Court users, and media outlets to support and raise awareness about the exercise.
The three-day exercise will be conducted at Court registries nationwide.
The last court case census was conducted in 2015.
