The Judiciary has registered 118 election petitions stemming from the 2026 parliamentary and local government elections.
Judiciary spokesperson James Ereemye Mawanda said preparations are underway to ensure all cases are handled within the legally required six-months period.
Speaking to journalists at the Supreme Court in Kampala, Mawanda said the Judiciary has already assessed the number of cases and is allocating resources to manage them effectively and hearings are expected to begin soon.
He also revealed that the Principal Judge, Justice Jane Frances Abodo, has started deploying judges across the country based on workload and operational needs.
According to Mawanda, Masaka region has the highest number of petitions, while some areas like Bushenyi have none.
Several notable petitions have been filed, including one by musician-turned-politician Hillary Kiyaga, also known as Dr. Hilderman, challenging the victory of Amelia Kyambadde.
In Mukono, Birungi Kobusingye is challenging the victory of NUP’s Harriet Nakwedde in the Kayunga District Woman MP race.
The Masaka High Court Circuit is handling several petitions, including one in which Rose Nalubowa is contesting the election of NRM’s Justine Nameere as City Woman MP.
Key issues raised in the petitions include alleged electoral malpractice, vote tallying disputes, nomination irregularities, and misconduct by election officials.
Most petitioners are seeking fresh elections, while others want court declarations overturning results in their favor.
The Judiciary is expected to release hearing schedules once preparations are complete.
