The Judiciary is targeting to resolve 1,424 cases involving more than 325 billion shillings through mediation, which will be handled during the Trade, Construction and Corporate Disputes Settlement Fortnight scheduled for August 17th to 28th, 2026.
Head of the Commercial Division of the High Court, Justice Anna Mugenyi, says the cases include 1,250 trade disputes, 89 construction cases and 85 corporate disputes.
She says resolving the cases will help businesses recover money tied up in court battles and reduce the backlog of commercial cases.
Justice Mugenyi was speaking during a Judiciary roundtable at the Supreme Court Conference Hall in Kampala.
Kampala City Traders Association, KACITA, Chairperson Isa Ssekito, says small businesses are often disadvantaged when they have disputes with financially stronger companies or government agencies.
Ssekito says many traders lack written agreements to support their claims and cannot afford lengthy legal battles.
He has urged traders to properly document their business transactions and use mediation to settle disputes.
Deputy Chief Justice Moses Kazibwe Kawumi says timely resolution of commercial disputes is important for Uganda’s economic growth.
He says prolonged disputes can lock up business capital, increase costs and discourage investors.
The Judiciary says mediation is yielding results, with 503 cases completed in the fourth quarter of the 2025/2026 financial year compared to 247 in the first quarter.
