Renown Human rights lawyer and Chapter 4 Uganda Executive Director Nicholas Opiyo has been further remanded to Kitalya government prison after a grade one magistrate informed him that he lacks jurisdiction (powers ) to handle his bail .
Opiyo who appeared in court via video conferencing has been formally charged before the Anti -corruption court with an offence of money laundering in which the DPP states that by the virtue of his position as ED Chapter 4 Uganda, he received 340, 000 US dollars well knowing that the said funds are proceeds of a crime .
However he could not plead to the offence as it is only tribal and boilable by the High court.
Presiding magistrate Moses Nabende ordered Opiyo to return to court for mention on the 11th/January 2021.
Meanwhile, Opiyo’s lawyer David Mpanga said his bail application is fixed for hearing on Wednesday 30th/December before Anti-corruption Highcourt judge Jane Okuo Kajuga.
Opiyo was remanded to prison on 24th/December 20202 by Nakawa magistrates court.
