The Chief Justice, Owiny-Dollo, has urged all Judicial officers to respond to the demands of justice seekers by delivering fair and impartial rulings.
Justice Owiny-Dollo emphasized the need to render justice with conscience, without fear, favour, malice, ill-will, or undue affection.
The chief Justice reminded the judges that, just like doctors heal lives, judges are “conflict healers” and should inspire public trust and confidence in the justice they administer.
Speaking at the 26th Annual Judges’ Conference in Kampala, the Chief Justice reassured the justices that they should not fear any man in their adjudication of cases, but should instead uphold justice in the name of God, on whose behalf they serve.
The Chief Justice’ s remarks come amid ongoing public debate following a recent Supreme Court decision banning army courts trying civilians.
While officiating the conference, president Yoweri Museveni reiterated the National Resistance Movement’s (NRM) commitment to economic transformation, emphasizing industrialization, agriculture, and infrastructure development as key pillars.
In his speech read by Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among, Museveni urged citizens to embrace commercial farming and entrepreneurship, emphasizing that initiatives like the Parish Development Model and Operation Wealth Creation will help boost production and household incomes.
Museveni also highlighted the importance of patriotism, Pan-Africanism, social-economic transformation, and democracy.
The Annual Judges’ Conference is being held under the theme “Positioning Uganda ‘s Judiciary to Contribute to Social Economic Development” and it brought together Judges and Justices from the High Court, Court of Appeal/Constitutional Court and Supreme Court to engage in discussions and share experiences on promoting access to justice and contributing to social-economic development.
It also offers an opportunity for the judiciary to showcase its achievements and challenges in promoting justice and upholding the rule of law.
According to the Chairperson Organizing Committee and Supreme Court Justice Mike Chibita, the conference also seeks to strengthen the judiciary’s capacity to deliver justice efficiently and effectively.
