The history of the Auschwitz concentration camp: A look inside the camp

The year 1944 was not a good one for the German war machine. The inevitable defeat of the Third Reich at the front became obvious - if not from the east, then from the west, where the Americans and the British had opened a second front. Defeats with the regular armies of the enemy were not the only problem of the German command. Also, the Poles, having organized themselves into an armed underground, decided to fight the invaders, starting on August 1, 1944, the struggle for the capital, which went down in history as the Warsaw Uprising. As a result, the Germans were forced to gradually eliminate the concentration camps and erase the traces of mass genocide. Back in August, the SS began destroying documentation of crimes committed at Auschwitz and preparing for the evacuation of the camp. At the same time, the next phase of the extermination of Auschwitz prisoners began, and now they have been eliminated with great intensity. In addition, the prisoners were transported to areas that were not threatened by the invasion of the Soviet army at that time. The evacuation also covered the warehouses of the branch in Brzezinke.

On June 13, 1940, more than 750 Polish prisoners were released from the cells of Tarnów prison on Konarski St. The Poles were ready to travel, but were not informed of their destination. They underwent mandatory disinfection, and then gathered on the square near Demb, from where they formed a long parade to the railway station. Residents of Tarnovo watched the march. Such scenes should have shocked Poles who had been oppressed by the Germans during the years of occupation. In the middle of 1940, they were unaware of the prisoners' tragedy. At the station, prisoners were bundled into wagons and sent to Auschwitz. There were 728 people in the transport. It is not 100% known what happened to more than twenty Poles who were released from custody in Tarnovo.

The BIIa camp closed on November 1, and the BIa and BIb closed on November 24. A similar fate befell BIII. In the same month, the crematorium premises and elements of the gas chambers were closed. The prisoners were instructed to conceal the traces of the crime. On January 17, 1945, the last camp roll call took place. There were 67,012 male and female prisoners. Evacuation campaigns to the Third Reich soon began. On the eve of the liberation of the camp by the 60th army of the 1st Ukrainian Front, which took place on January 27, documents about crimes were burned in the camp and crematoriums II, III and V were blown up. In total, 7.5 thousand Jews were released, whom the Germans planned to exterminate. They failed due to lack of time. Just like the attempt to hide all traces of violent crimes, it was unsuccessful. On the spot, Soviet soldiers found several hundred bodies on the streets and in the barracks area. The remains of the extermination machine have not disappeared either, becoming weighty evidence of the brutal occupation of Poland by the German people. After the war, in order to document the enormity of the crimes of the Germans, a museum was created on the territory of the Auschwitz-Birkenau camp. The total number of their victims is unknown and has been controversial for many years. According to recent studies, it is estimated at 1.1 million people.
