The Judiciary has announced plans to create an Environmental and Utilities Division of the High Court to fast-track disputes linked to climate change, wildlife protection and major development projects.
Chief Justice Dr Flavian Zeija revealed the plan while opening the New Law Year 2026 at the Judiciary Headquarters in Kampala.
He says that the move is aimed at addressing the delays caused by prolonged hearing of cases.
Dr Zeija noted that Uganda is increasingly affected by climate change and environmental degradation, yet court disputes over major projects can take years to be resolved.
The proposed division will prioritise cases related to environmental conservation and wildlife protection, areas he described as vital to national development and economic growth.
President Yoweri Museveni, who was the chief guest at the launch of the New Year, reaffirmed government support for expanding court coverage and operationalising newly gazetted courts.
In his speech delivered by Vice President Jessica Alupo, the President urged lawyers to avoid practices that delay justice and embrace mediation.
