The Buganda Road Chief Magistrates Court has granted bail to civil society activist Dr. Sarah Bireete after three weeks on remand over alleged violations of the Data Protection and Privacy Act.
Dr.Bireete, the Executive Director of the Centre for Constitutional Governance, was granted a cash bail of one million shillings by Grade One Magistrate Winnie Nankya Jatiko, who ruled that the offences she faces are bailable and that she presented substantial sureties.
Each of the four sureties was bonded at 10 million shillings non-cash.
Those standing surety include her brother Joseph Beyanga, former Leader of Opposition Winnie Kiiza, UPC president Joseph Ochieno and former Ugandan ambassador to the United States Edith Grace Ssempala.
The court also ordered Dr. Bireete to deposit her passport in Court and restrained her from travelling outside the country without court permission.
The matter was adjourned to February 27, 2026, when hearing of the case will begin.
Dr. Bireete was arrested on January 2 and charged with unlawfully obtaining and disclosing voters’ information without consent from the Electoral Commission.
Prosecutors allege the data was shared in Kampala, Wakiso and Mukono in the year 2025.
She has denied all the charges.
