Former Senior Superintendent of Police Nixon Agasiirwe has asked the High Court to release him on bail, as he awaits trial over the 2015 murder of former Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions Joan Namazzi Kagezi.
Agasiirwe, 54, told Judge Isaac Muwata that he has spent more than 180 days on remand without trial contrary to the constitution.
He maintains that his continued detention at Luzira Maximum Security Prison violates his right to a fair and speedy trial and the presumption of innocence.
Through his lawyers of Akampurira & Partners Advocates, Agasiirwe presented three sureties including businessman Aloysius Muhangi, environmental researcher Kurareva Levi, and land dealer Mugumya Leemani.
He told court he has a fixed place of residence and substantial investments, and is unlikely to abscond if released.
Agasiirwe was arrested in May 2025 and was charged with coordinating and financing Kagezi’s assassination.
He is jointly charged with Abdunoor Ssemujju commonly known as Minana.
Prosecution alleges he facilitated the killing by providing logistical support to the assailants.
State Attorney Richard Birivumbuka asked for more time to respond to Agasiirwe’s bail application.
Justice Muwata directed the prosecution to file written submissions by February 27, with the defence to reply on March 3.
