The Supreme Court, Court of Appeal, and High Court will close temporarily for one week as judges attend the 26th Annual Judges Conference scheduled to take place from 3rd February to 6th, 2025.
According to Justice Mike Chibita, the Chairperson of the organizing Committee, the conference to be held in Kampala aims to enhance the judiciary’s role in supporting Uganda’s socioeconomic transformation.
Justice Chibita explained that the conference will focus on developing better strategies for improving justice administration and judiciary’s contributions to socioeconomic development.
Justice Chibita called upon all court users and the public to support the judiciary as it strategizes on how best to deliver on its mandate in the context of Uganda’s social and economic development.
The event, themed “Positioning Uganda’s Judiciary to Contribute to the Country’s Social and Economic Development,” will bring together esteemed judges and justices from the appellate courts, as well as registrars.
President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni is expected to be the Chief Guest at the conference.
Judiciary’s biggest problem in the past has been the case backlog.
As at the close of September 2024, their total pending cases stood at 163,634 while backlog was 40,965 cases according to a report by the Chief Registrar Sarah Langa Siu.
